Annotate

This guide details how to annotate your imported photos in CoralNet.

Open annotation tool

  1. Go to the Images page.
  2. Click on the image to annotate to open it.
  3. Click the Annotation tool button to open the annotation tool.

Annotation tool

The annotation tool shows the photo with a grid of points overlaid on it. The goal is to have each point annotated with the label of what is at this point in the photo. You can either confirm the machine-annotated point or pick your own label.

Points are colored based on their status: unannotated, suggested (yellow), annotated (purple), selected (green). The table on the right shows the current label for each point. The label text is colored based on their status: suggested (grey), annotated (black).

Suggested labels are not counted in the statistics until you confirm the label (making the point annotated). Once all points are annotated and saved, the text ALL DONE will appear under the table.

Zoom the image

To zoom the image:

  • Zoom in: left-click on the image; or click the button; or press Shift+Up.
  • Zoom out: right-click on the image; or click the button; or press Shift+Down.

Select points

There are multiple ways to select points to annotate:

  • Select points by clicking the point number in the table on the right. You can select multiple points.
  • Hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click a point in the image. You can select multiple points.
  • Select a point by clicking the label text in the table on the right. You can select one point.
  • Hold Shift and click a point in the image. You can select one point.
  • Press the . key to select the first unannotated point.
  • Press Tab to go to the next point (annotated or unannotated).
  • Press Shift+Tab to go to the previous point.
  • Click the button to unselect all points.
  • Click the button to select all unannotated points.
  • Click the button to invert your current selection (unselect all selected points while selecting all unselected points).
  • Click the button and drag a rectangle on the photo to add those points to your selection.

Pick a label

Either click the label in the label grid below the image, or start typing in the floating textbox on the image. Machine-generated suggestions will appear ranked by confidence. To pick the top-most suggestion, simply press Enter. To pick another label, start typing its code and press Enter once the correct label is selected.

Save your work

Either click the Save Progress button under the table, or press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac).

Move to another photo

To move to the next photo, click the Next link or press G then N. To move to the previous photo, click the Prev link or press G then P.
